Notes on the Verzocchi's Collection

The prevailing theme of the Verzocchi collection is work; however it is
also the portrait of an Italy which no longer exists, a country of fishermen, farmers, seamstresses, lace makers, paddy field workers and ironmongers who work in a rustic and semi urbanized landscape: under construction. I have often stopped to imagine what a collection of artists belonging to my generation, 50 years from now, would be like. Is it possible to hypothesize a development of the Verzocchi collection in the context of such a wide time gap? What would happen if such a time gap were to be translated into a story told by a series of images?
vThe performances in the latest edition of Ipercorpo (one per evening from Friday 17th may) shall all be considered for inclusion in a future exhibition, two videos (Nui Simu by marinella Senatore and Il capo by Yuri Ancarani) and a performance (Dove si racconta di profondi sospiri e lunghi pensieri by Stefania Galegati Shines) which are all stories about different forms and places (the commemoration of a mining disaster in Sardinia, rituality and gestures of a marble miner from the Apuan Alps; two large agricultural machines used in brutal and noisy combat). All of them encourage us to reflect on problems related to work and its representation in Italy today: is it still possible to describe such issues through defined figures as is the case in this collection? And what is the role of image pro- duction in reshaping the mechanisms of this society?

YURI ANCARANI

Il Capo

A film by Yuri Ancarani – Italia, 15 min

Monte Bettogli, Carrara: in the marble quarries men and machines dig the mountain. “Il Capo” (The Chief) manages, coordinates and guides quarrymen and heavy-duty machines using a language consisting solely of gestures and signs. Conducting his dangerous and sublime orchestra against the backdrop of the sheerslopes and peaks of the Apuane Alps, the Chief works in total noise, which create a paradoxical silence.

STEFANIA GALEGATI SHINES

Dove si racconta di profondi sospiri e lunghi pensieri

performance

I would like to repropose a video of the 1999, Where we are told of deep sighs and long thoughts, as a performance. An excavator and a bulldozer, two machines that we usually see on the roadside, lifting stones and digging holes, will fight. As a martial art, combat takes on a ritual, almost a dance. The power of the machines, the deafening noise of the engines and the metal shots of the battle, will transport the audience in an atmosphere of middle age love dueling, or maybe to the’Jurassic era of the dinosaurs, but reminding one of these violent beautiful anime with giant robots…
