How is it possible to adapt Kafka’s “Metamorphosis” for the stage, without representing the story but by bringing to life the existential questions which abound with such force throughout the work? Città di Ebla renders the modern and restless soul of “The Metamorphosis”. The work is seized, only to be unleashed in a powerful crescendo which captivates the spectators, immersing them in a world dominated by a transforming body, incapable of fleeing an inhumane humanity which persistently seeks it out. In this way, Gregor Samsa is not all that different from a businessman, whose only desire, upon returning from a business trip and listening to society trying to reach him through a series of answer phone messages, is to take a hot bath. However, in that room an inevitable transformation awaits him, from which not even the spectator can escape.
