The most tragic and inexorable grapple with the body that is known to the history of poetry”. This is how the Italian playwright Giovanni Testori defined Michelangelo’s verses. Perhaps this is the reason why Sostakovic, at the end of his life, plunged into them, found himself in those lines and rendered such grapple through his space-filling music.
